World Book Day

Our Book Club has been very popular with children and adults alike!  The children can borrow a book to read and return it when they are finished with it.  For each story read, a ping pong ball is added to the child’s group jar.  At the end of the week, the children help to count all the balls to find which group has read the most stories.  The children make a graph to show the results each week.  The winning group receives a special stamp.

During our Reading Festival, lots of family members came in to read their favourite stories to small groups of children.  On World Book Day the children and staff dressed up as their favourite characters.  There were lots of fun learning activities to celebrate our love of books!

Fairtrade

We had fun learning about the importance of Fairtrade. Look at some of the delicious snacks we prepared using Fairtrade products.  The children made delicious pancakes with yummy toppings.  Ms Hill also made a pasta dish with the children using some Fairtrade ingredients.

Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year was celebrated in style.  Everyone had fun creating a dragon dance with music, instruments, ribbons and the wonderful dragon that the children created using paint, craft materials, fabric and cardboard boxes.  Snack was particularly tasty with noodles, crackers, vegetables and Chinese sauces.

The children made lanterns, learned a song and also copied Chinese writing.  Check out the colourful dragon....

Scottish Celebration

During the month of January, we had great fun learning about the Scots language.  We enjoyed stories, made shortbread, sang songs and participated in arts and crafts activities.  We joined Primaries One, Two and Three in the hall for a special celebration.  Our EL&CC sang ‘3 Craws’.  The audience went wild with applause for our performers.  Some of the children went to the Carrick Centre with Mrs Murray where they performed the song for some local senior citizens.

Construction of Our New EL&CC

 At the beginning of January, work began on the construction of our new Early Learning and Childcare Centre.  It has been fascinating to watch the machinery and workers prepare the site and make progress with the construction process.  This has provided a very relevant, meaningful and motivating context for learning.  The children and staff have worked hard to create our very own construction site on the decked area.  The children have had great fun using wooden blocks, miniature terracotta bricks and cement to make their own models.  They have been learning to measure and have also had opportunities to risk assess and use real tools, under the careful supervision of staff. The children have also looked at the architect’s drawings and made their own plans.  We look forward to charting progress.
